Leon Germaine Worsfold was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in a Middlesbrough hotel in March 2022 and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Full Description

A 47-year-old man from Middlesbrough, Leon Germaine Worsfold, has been sentenced to nine years' imprisonment following his conviction for rape and sexual assault. The offences occurred in March 2022 at a hotel in Middlesbrough, where Worsfold attacked a vulnerable woman in her thirties.

According to Cleveland Police, the incident took place in a hotel room, where Worsfold assaulted and raped the victim. A thorough investigation by the force's Major Enquiry Team led to Worsfold being charged with the serious sexual offences. Despite denying the allegations throughout the legal process, which forced the victim to relive the trauma by providing evidence in court, Worsfold was found guilty earlier in May 2024.

On Friday, 31 May 2024, at Teesside Crown Court, Judge [Name not specified in source] imposed the nine-year custodial sentence on Worsfold for the attack. Detective Inspector Matt Hollingsworth, who led the investigation, commended the victim's bravery, stating: “Leon Worsfold attacked a vulnerable woman. He assaulted and raped her; and at court he continued to deny the incident, meaning the victim had to relive the ordeal and give evidence. I would like to thank the woman for her bravery and for her unwavering strength throughout the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.”

The case underscores Cleveland Police's commitment to tackling sexual violence, with the force emphasising that they will not tolerate such crimes and will pursue perpetrators through the courts. The conviction was secured through detailed police work, highlighting the importance of reporting sexual offences, regardless of when they occurred.
