Offence Summary

Joseph Wright was jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of multiple offences including four counts of rape, sexual assault by penetration, and coercive and controlling behaviour against his victim over several years.

Full Description

Joseph Wright, a 28-year-old man from the Bushey area in Hertfordshire, subjected his victim to a prolonged campaign of sexual and physical abuse between April 2020 and July 2024. Following a trial at St Albans Crown Court, he was convicted on four counts of rape, one count of sexual assault by penetration, grievous bodily harm, two counts of coercive and controlling behaviour, threats to kill, and actual bodily harm. The jury heard detailed evidence of Wright's sustained pattern of abuse, which began in March 2020 with an initial assault at an address and escalated rapidly thereafter.

The abuse started when the victim was assaulted in March 2020. In April 2020, she was assaulted again while sitting in a parked car, marking the beginning of an intensifying pattern of intimidation and control. From later in 2020, the victim endured repeated assaults, including incidents where Wright kicked her and verbally degraded her, leaving her distressed and isolated. A particularly severe altercation occurred in December 2022 at the victim's home, resulting in Wright inflicting serious, life-changing injuries. Due to the coercive control she was under, the victim felt unable to report the incident at the time.

Further incidents took place in 2023, where the victim sought help on several occasions but was prevented from fully disclosing the abuse by fear of reprisals. In 2024, another violent episode occurred at a public event, which the victim minimised when speaking to police out of fear of what Wright might do. The victim finally ended the relationship on 31 December 2024, believing her life was at risk. Wright was arrested on 8 July 2025 in connection with these offences and has been remanded in custody since being charged on 9 July 2025.

Detective Constable Jason Tinsey from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team commented on the case, stating: “The victim in this case has shown tremendous courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation through what has been an incredibly distressing experience. Her strength has been vital in ensuring Joseph Wright has been held accountable for his actions.” The court sentenced Wright to 20 years' imprisonment, reflecting the severity of his crimes. This case was investigated by Hertfordshire Constabulary, as detailed in their official news release published on 2 April 2026.
