Offence Summary

Caroline Dunsmore was sentenced to 12 years in prison for her involvement in a paedophile gang that sexually abused and raped two young girls, including her own daughter, over several years.

Full Description

Caroline Dunsmore, aged 43, was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment earlier in 2007 for her participation in a paedophile gang that carried out sustained sexual abuse and rape against two young girls over a period spanning years. As the mother of one victim, Dana Fowley, Dunsmore admitted to abusing her daughter from the age of six in a house in Edinburgh and during a specific incident in a caravan in Perthshire between April and June 1990.

The Edinburgh High Court proceedings revealed the depravity of the gang, led by William King, who died before facing trial. Dunsmore's admissions included years of sexual abuse and rape targeting the girls when they were under 10 years old. She later provided crucial evidence against fellow gang member Morris Petch during his trial, contributing to his conviction for raping the same victims.

One victim, Dana Fowley, now 26, described in court how the abuse became 'a way of life' from age six, leading both girls to contemplate suicide. Judge Lord Malcolm condemned the collective actions as 'grave and disgraceful', emphasising the profound damage to the vulnerable children involved. Dunsmore's sentence reflected the severity of her role in facilitating and participating in the offences.

The case, reported by The Guardian on 11 August 2007, highlighted the organised nature of the abuse within the gang, which also involved John O'Flaherty, sentenced to 13 years. Ms Fowley waived anonymity to speak out, expressing relief post-sentencing and a desire for privacy. The court's assessment underscored the long-lasting trauma inflicted by such familial and group-based exploitation.
