Offence Summary

Malcom Graham, a registered sex offender, sexually assaulted a woman in her Bedfordshire home while she slept in 2018, taking advantage of their friendship. He was sentenced to over six years in prison at Luton Crown Court.

Full Description

A registered sex offender from Biggleswade has been imprisoned for more than six years after committing a predatory sexual assault on a woman in her own home. Malcom Graham, who was already listed on the Sex Offenders Register due to a previous conviction for sexual assault in the 1980s, exploited his friendship with the victim to carry out the attack in 2018.

The incident occurred while the woman was sleeping in her Bedfordshire residence. Graham, who resided in Biggleswade at the time, entered her home and assaulted her without consent. The victim reported the assault to Bedfordshire Police in 2019, prompting a thorough investigation that uncovered the non-consensual nature of the encounter. Despite Graham's denial during questioning, claiming 'she did not say no', the court recognised that consent requires free choice, and factors such as fear or pressure can render an act criminal.

Graham, now living on Skegness Road in Stevenage, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual assault. On 9 February 2023, at Luton Crown Court, he received a sentence of six years and seven months in prison, along with an extended licence period of three years and six months. The sentencing highlighted the profound impact on the victim, whose impact statement detailed the lasting trauma inflicted.

In her statement, the victim expressed: 'The flashbacks I had about the night it happened were unbearable. I would regularly have night terrors which would result in me screaming out in my sleep... That man ruined and stole a huge chunk of our lives.' She further noted: 'Although we can never forget what that monster put us through, we are working on a better life without him in it.' This case, as reported by Biggleswade Today on 16 February 2023, underscores the ongoing efforts by Bedfordshire Police to address sexual offences, demonstrating that justice can be pursued regardless of the time elapsed since the crime.
