Full Description

Peter Nicholson, a 60-year-old man from Salford Priors in Warwickshire, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against a young girl. The predator, described by police as dangerous, carried out repeated assaults on his victim over a six-month period, including assaults by touching and penetration, as well as attempted rape.

The offences came to light when the young victim disclosed the abuse to her friends, who informed her mother. This prompted the mother to contact authorities, leading to an investigation by Warwickshire Police. A specially trained officer worked with the victim to build trust, enabling her to provide a full account of the horrific experiences. Upon arresting Nicholson, police seized his electronic devices and discovered more than 1,330 extreme pornographic images, to which he later pleaded guilty.

At Coventry Crown Court, Nicholson was convicted on six counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, two counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by penetration, and two counts of attempted rape. In addition to the 17-year custodial sentence, he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a lifelong restraining order was imposed to protect potential future victims.

Detective Sergeant Emma Mackay from Warwickshire Police commented on the case, stating: 'Nicholson is clearly a dangerous and predatory offender. The length of this sentence reflects the severity and depravity of his offending.' She praised the victim and her family for their support throughout the investigation, adding: 'I’d like to commend the victim and her family in supporting this investigation and ensuring Nicholson has been held to account for his appalling crimes.' The victim herself had initially hesitated to come forward due to fears of not being believed, but the jury saw through Nicholson's lies, delivering justice.

This case, reported by CoventryLive on 15 February 2024, underscores the importance of victims speaking out against sexual abuse, with DS Mackay noting: 'Hopefully this will give other victims of sexual offences confidence there are people out there who will listen, offer support and investigate.' Warwickshire Police led the investigation, highlighting their commitment to tackling such serious crimes in the community.
