Offence Summary

Keiren Sutherland, a paedophile, repeatedly raped a five-year-old girl and possessed indecent images of children, leading to his conviction and imprisonment.

Full Description

Keiren Sutherland, aged 29 from Warriston Place in Edinburgh, but residing in Doncaster at the time of the offences, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for committing multiple sexual crimes against a young child. The case, which unfolded in Sheffield Crown Court, highlights the severity of child sexual exploitation and the justice system's response to such predatory behaviour.

Sutherland was found guilty of two counts of raping a girl under 13 and one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act following a trial in May 2024. Prior to the trial, he had admitted to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child after forensic examination of his phone revealed the images stored in a secure folder. The rapes occurred on multiple occasions when Sutherland was living in Doncaster, targeting a vulnerable five-year-old victim.

The court initially imposed an 18-year sentence, but the judge extended it by an additional seven years, classifying Sutherland as a dangerous offender. This extension underscores the ongoing risk he poses to society. In addition to the custodial sentence, Sutherland received a 20-year restraining order to protect the victim from any further contact.

Detective Constable Dani Duncan-Blakley of South Yorkshire Police commended the victim's courage in her statement: 'Sutherland is a dangerous sexual predator who is now rightly where he belongs thanks to the courage of his young victim and her supportive family.' She detailed the traumatic ordeal the child endured at a tender age and praised her bravery in confiding in her family and police, which was crucial in securing the conviction. The investigation was described as long and complex, but the jury saw through Sutherland's denials, delivering guilty verdicts on the charges he contested.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers within communities and the importance of child protection. South Yorkshire Police's thorough forensic work and the victim's testimony were pivotal in bringing Sutherland to justice, ensuring he can no longer harm others.
