Full Description

A man from Lydbury North has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of violent sexual offences committed against a woman in Telford. Mark Hirons, aged 38, of Habershon Close, was convicted at Shrewsbury Crown Court on charges of rape, assault, and intentional strangulation.

The offences came to light in May 2025 when the victim reported the incident to West Mercia Police. Officers promptly arrested Hirons and launched a thorough investigation into the allegations. Following the gathering of evidence, Hirons was charged and proceeded to trial, where he was found guilty by the jury in November 2025.

Sentencing took place on 9 February 2026 at Shrewsbury Crown Court. In addition to the 15-year custodial term, Hirons received a restraining order to protect the victim. The court recognised the severity of his actions, which demonstrated a pattern of predatory behaviour towards women.

Detective Constable Darren Wincott, from Telford’s Protecting Vulnerable People team at West Mercia Police, commented on the case: “I am very grateful for the sentence the judge has handed to Hirons, who is clearly a very dangerous individual who preys on women. I would like to commend the victim in this, who has been incredibly brave throughout this investigation. I hope the sentence can offer her some form of closure and will enable her to move forward with her life.” This statement underscores the police's commitment to supporting victims and ensuring justice is served in cases of sexual violence.

The case highlights the importance of reporting such crimes, as the victim's courage led to Hirons' conviction and removal from society for a significant period. West Mercia Police continue to prioritise the protection of vulnerable individuals in the region.
