Offence Summary

Wesley McKenna raped and sexually assaulted two women in separate attacks on the same day in May 2024, leading to his conviction and imprisonment.

Full Description

Wesley McKenna, a 48-year-old resident of Oswin Road, Forest Hall, North Tyneside, committed two harrowing rapes and multiple sexual assaults against vulnerable women within hours of each other in May 2024. The incidents, which took place in the Tyneside area, left both victims profoundly affected, with one suffering severe impacts on her mental health and family relationships, and the other forced to relocate her home due to feelings of isolation and fear.

The first attack occurred when a drunk woman fell asleep and awoke to discover McKenna raping her. Later that same day, he targeted a second vulnerable woman, overpowering her with his strength and weight as she froze in terror, unable to resist the assault. McKenna's actions were described in court as terrifying ordeals for both victims. At Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Tim Gittins highlighted the profound effects on the women during sentencing, stating: 'The effect on both victims has been profound.' One victim reported that the trauma had damaged her mental health and her bond with her family, while the other expressed fears of contracting hepatitis from McKenna, who carries the virus—though tests confirmed she had not been infected. She also felt compelled to move home, exacerbating her sense of isolation.

McKenna, who has a history of 106 previous convictions but none prior for sexual offences, stood trial and was found guilty of two counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault. The court heard mitigating factors, including McKenna's difficult life following a childhood accident that caused a brain injury, leading to learning difficulties and a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Despite this, the severity of the offences warranted a substantial sentence. Judge Gittins imposed a 14-year custodial term, extended by a five-year licence period, indefinite registration on the sex offenders' register, and restraining orders protecting both victims.

The case was reported by Chronicle Live, with court proceedings held at Newcastle Crown Court in early 2026. Northumbria Police, responsible for the investigation in the North East region, pursued the charges following the May 2024 incidents. This sentencing underscores the judiciary's firm stance against sexual violence in the United Kingdom.
