Offence Summary

Subrahmaniam Sathananthan, a paedophile from Wembley, was convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl and a boy aged 9 to 13 in their homes, abusing a position of trust over several years.

Full Description

Subrahmaniam Sathananthan, a 62-year-old resident of Pembroke Close in Wembley, has been convicted at Isleworth Crown Court of multiple child sexual offences committed against two young victims in their own homes. The Metropolitan Police investigation began following two reports of sexual assault made on 27 April 2019, revealing a pattern of abuse that exploited Sathananthan's position of trust.

The assaults on the girl occurred when she was 12 years old. Sathananthan entered her bedroom under the pretext of using her computer to create documents for his new business. In this private setting, he sexually assaulted her, telling her it was 'just between you and me' and 'no-one else needs to know'. Over the subsequent years, he attempted to maintain secrecy by buying the victim expensive gifts, such as sunglasses and perfumes, to silence her.

  • One count of indecent assault on a male (relating to the boy).
  • Seven counts of indecent assault.
  • Two counts of indecency with a child.

The boy was abused between the ages of 9 and 13, with the assaults taking place when no other family members were present in the house. The crimes came to light years later during a Skype call the girl had with her family while at university, where she disclosed the incidents. This prompted the boy to reveal that he had also been assaulted by Sathananthan.

Sathananthan was arrested on 10 May 2019 and denied any involvement in the sexual offences against either victim. Following a trial at Isleworth Crown Court on 21 March 2023, he was found guilty on all ten charges. Sentencing is scheduled for 16 June 2023 at the same court. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Smithson of the Metropolitan Police's Public Protection Team commended the victims' bravery, stating: 'I commend the bravery of both victim-survivors in coming forward and reporting the assaults to us. My team and I have ensured that full support has been given to them both throughout the investigation, as we worked towards getting justice for them.'

The case, reported by Joseph Reaidi for the Times Series, highlights the Metropolitan Police's commitment to investigating historical sexual offences, with DCI Smithson adding: 'I want to reiterate that anyone who reports a sexual offence whether historical or present, you will be listened to and believed from the start.'
