Offence Summary

Ahmadreza Khalafi, an Iranian asylum seeker, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault by touching against a woman in Bishop’s Stortford after a rape charge was dropped.

Full Description

An Iranian asylum seeker named Ahmadreza Khalafi, aged 29, faced serious sexual offence charges following an incident in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. Initially arrested on 2 May 2025, Khalafi was accused of one count of rape, five counts of sexual assault, and one count of sexual assault by penetration, all involving the same woman over the age of 18. The alleged offences occurred earlier that year in Devoils Lane, a narrow alleyway beside the Black Lion pub in the town centre.

Khalafi, who had no fixed address at the time but was lodging in Bishop’s Stortford with assistance from a local church after being granted the right to stay in the UK, appeared at St Albans Crown Court on 6 June 2025. He was remanded in custody for six months pending a trial scheduled for December 2025. During this period, he spent time behind bars awaiting further proceedings.

On 2 December 2025, at the same court, significant developments occurred in the case. Khalafi pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault by touching. The prosecution withdrew the rape charge, and the charge of sexual assault by penetration was ordered to lie on file, meaning it was not proceeded with but noted for record. The court remanded Khalafi in custody once more, with sentencing set for 5 February 2026. As reported by the Bishop's Stortford Independent, Khalafi will remain imprisoned for at least two additional months until the sentencing hearing determines his formal punishment.

This case highlights the legal processes in handling sexual offence allegations in the UK, where plea negotiations can lead to adjusted charges. No specific quotes from the court proceedings were available in the reporting, but the outcome underscores the seriousness of the admitted offences against the victim.
