Full Description

At Durham Crown Court, 48-year-old Darren Wilkinson from Peterlee was convicted of rape and sexual assault following a disturbing incident in July 2024. The victim, a woman who had been sunbathing in her bikini in her back garden, had consumed wine and medication to aid sleep after several sleepless nights. She fell into a deep sleep on a lounger, unaware of Wilkinson's intrusion into her garden where he sexually touched her and then raped her without her waking during the attack.

Upon waking later, the victim grew suspicious and confronted Wilkinson, prompting him to fear police involvement. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Wilkinson returned to the property and ripped the hard drive from the external CCTV system, discarding it onto his own garage roof. The following day, he retrieved it and hid it in a cardboard box inside his garage. However, a vigilant neighbour observed his suspicious behaviour and alerted the police, leading to the recovery of the hard drive. Despite damage to the device, forensic examination allowed authorities to retrieve the footage, which clearly captured the entire assault.

Wilkinson, of Stafford Place, Peterlee, denied the charges of sexual assault and rape, claiming any sexual activity was consensual. A jury at Durham Crown Court rejected his defence and found him guilty on both counts. He had previously admitted to causing criminal damage at the victim's home. Judge Nathan Adams imposed a nine-year custodial sentence, of which Wilkinson must serve two-thirds before being eligible for release on licence. The judge also placed Wilkinson on the sex offenders' register indefinitely and issued a ten-year restraining order in relation to the victim.

The case was investigated by Durham Constabulary, highlighting the importance of CCTV evidence in securing convictions for serious sexual offences. Prosecutor details were not specified in court reports, but the footage proved pivotal in disproving Wilkinson's claims.
