Offence Summary

Remus Stan was convicted of eight charges including trafficking a woman into prostitution, rape, and involvement in gang rape, as part of a Romanian gang exploiting women in Dundee through brothels and drug supply.

Full Description

Remus Stan, a member of a Romanian exploitation gang, was sentenced for his role in trafficking and sexually assaulting vulnerable women in Dundee. The conviction came after a comprehensive trial in January 2025 at the High Court in Glasgow, where Stan and four co-accused were found guilty of offences uncovered by a 2021 Police Scotland probe into human trafficking in Tayside. The case involved 10 victims and detailed the gang's systematic use of drugs and coercion to force women into brothels.

Stan was found guilty of eight charges, notably trafficking a woman into prostitution alongside ringleader Mircea Marian Cumpanasoiu and committing rape. He also participated in the gang rape of one woman with other members, including Cristian Urlateanu and Catalin Dobre. The offences took place at locations such as Bright Street, Gellatly Street, and Perth Road in Dundee. Following his arrest, Stan faced justice as part of the group, with the trial lasting six weeks and relying on victim testimonies.

  • Stan will serve 12 years in prison, followed by a five-year Trafficking and Exploitation Prevention Order.
  • He was added to the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
  • The gang's actions caused profound trauma, as noted by prosecutors.

Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal, praised the victims' bravery: 'Thanks to their bravery, and the support given to them by charity organisations and justice partners, this prosecution was made possible.' Detective Chief Inspector Scott Carswell of Police Scotland affirmed: 'That call [from the community] can be the first step in freeing someone from slavery and exploitation.' The international collaboration was key, as some members had fled abroad.

Stan's involvement highlights the coordinated nature of the gang's criminal enterprise, with sentences designed to reflect the severity of the sexual and exploitative crimes committed.
