Offence Summary

Paedophile Kenneth Pybus, banned from unsupervised child contact, breached his order by giving sweets to children in an attempt to establish relationships, resulting in a 14-month sentence.

Full Description

Kenneth Pybus, a 75-year-old paedophile from Sacriston, County Durham, was jailed for 14 months at Durham Crown Court for two counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order. Released on licence in February 2022 after a five-year sentence in 2019 for child sexual offences, Pybus was prohibited from unsupervised contact with children. Despite this, he began speaking to children and giving them sweets and dog treats to 'establish relationships'.

Durham Police became aware of Pybus's actions shortly after his release and arrested him, leading to his recall to prison. The court identified his behaviour as 'classic grooming techniques', as stated by Recorder Edward Legard during sentencing. Pybus pleaded guilty to the breaches.

The case illustrates the ongoing risks posed by convicted sex offenders and the importance of monitoring compliance with prevention orders. Pybus's previous conviction for child sexual offences underscored the necessity of strict enforcement to protect children from potential reoffending.

Durham Crown Court imposed the custodial sentence to deter further violations and safeguard the community, particularly vulnerable children in the area.
