Full Description

Two men from Barnet, Abdinasir Darbiye and Nurudeen Mohamed, have been sentenced to eight years each in jail for the rape of an 18-year-old girl in Hemel Hempstead. The incident occurred on August 1, 2023, when the victim and two of her friends were approached by Darbiye, Mohamed, and a third man at a nightclub in Watford.

The group took the girls to a Travelodge hotel in Hemel Hempstead, where the victim had been staying. Upon arrival, the victim was separated from her friends and subjected to a prolonged rape in a hotel room by Darbiye and Mohamed. The attack was described by investigating officer DC Jarl Thomason as a 'harrowing and prolonged ordeal' that left the victim traumatised.

Darbiye, residing at Stewards Holte Walk in Friern Barnet, and Mohamed, from High Road in Barnet, were both charged with three counts of rape. Following a trial, they were found guilty at Luton Crown Court. On January 24, 2024, Judge [name not specified] imposed the eight-year custodial sentences on each defendant, reflecting the severity of their crimes.

DC Jarl Thomason, from Hertfordshire Constabulary, commended the victim's bravery in reporting the assault and assisting with the investigation. He stated: 'Darbiye and Mohamed subjected their victim to a harrowing and prolonged ordeal which left her traumatised. The sentences handed to Darbiye and Mohamed by the court reflect the gravity of their offences. They now have a long time ahead of them to think about the harm they have caused this young woman.'

A third man, who was present during the incident, was acquitted of rape by joint enterprise. The case was investigated by Hertfordshire Constabulary, highlighting their commitment to supporting victims of sexual offences.
