Offence Summary

Charley Currie, a registered sex offender, was jailed for nine months after pleading guilty to two breaches of his interim Sexual Harm Prevention Order by approaching children under 16 in public places.

Full Description

A 21-year-old man from Kendal has been sentenced to nine months in prison for breaching his interim Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) on two occasions. Charley Currie, of Rinkfield, Kendal, who is a registered sex offender, pleaded guilty to the breaches at an earlier hearing and was sentenced on 17 July at a court in Cumbria.

The SHPO was imposed by Barrow Magistrates Court in January of this year, specifically prohibiting Currie from approaching any child under the age of 16 in a public place. Despite being aware of these strict conditions, Currie committed two 'brazen breaches' in Kendal by approaching children in public settings, demonstrating a clear disregard for the order designed to protect the public from sexual harm.

Detective Constable Francis Bowers, from Cumbria Police's Management of Sexual and Violent Offenders (MOSOVO) team, commented on the case: 'Currie clearly poses a risk to children which has been demonstrated in two brazen breaches of the court order imposed against him. He was well aware of the strict conditions of his SHPO yet showed complete disregard for them and approached children on two occasions.' Bowers further reassured the community, stating: 'We would like to reassure the community that we will continue working hard to bring more people like Currie to justice and get them behind bars. Cumbria’s MOSOVO team are committed to managing sexual offenders and will take a zero-tolerance approach against anyone found to breach the terms of these preventative orders.'

The sentencing underscores the authorities' commitment to enforcing SHPOs, which are civil orders aimed at restricting the behaviour of individuals convicted of sexual offences to prevent further harm. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Cumbria Police to manage and monitor registered sex offenders in the region.
