Offence Summary

Ugurou attempted to rape a young girl in a property in Axminster, Devon, before being disturbed and begging her not to tell anyone. He was subsequently jailed for nine-and-a-half years at Exeter Crown Court.

Full Description

A 50-year-old man named Ugurou, formerly residing in Exeter, has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison for the attempted rape of a young girl in Devon. The incident occurred in Axminster, where Ugurou attacked the victim upstairs in a property. During the assault, he was interrupted, prompting him to cease the attack and plead with the girl not to disclose the matter to anyone.

Following the attack, Ugurou was arrested and interviewed by police. However, he fled the county while the investigation was still underway, evading justice and causing additional distress and psychological harm to the victim. This evasion prolonged the legal process, but Ugurou was eventually apprehended and brought to trial at Exeter Crown Court.

At the trial, Ugurou claimed he had been set up, but the jury dismissed his account as untrue. The court heard detailed evidence of the attempted rape, highlighting the severity of the offence. The sentencing took place today, marking the culmination of a protracted investigation.

DC Jonathan Stephens from the Local Safeguarding Investigation Team commented on the case, stating: "I welcome the result and I am grateful for the courage and resilience shown by the victim and witnesses in this case, and for supporting this investigation over a protracted period of time." He further noted: "I hope this case reassures the community how seriously the police take reports of child sexual offences and gives people the courage to come forward in future." The case underscores the commitment of Devon and Cornwall Police to pursuing justice in child sexual offence matters.
