Offence Summary

James Dobson, a registered sex offender, was jailed for five months after committing shop thefts, using threatening behaviour, and breaching his sex offenders register notification requirements just weeks after his release from prison.

Full Description

James Dobson, a 23-year-old sex offender from Lancaster, was sentenced to five months' imprisonment at Lancashire Magistrates' Court on December 15, 2025, following a series of offences committed shortly after his release from prison.

Dobson had been released on December 1, 2025, but within weeks, he engaged in two instances of theft from shops in Lancaster city centre. During one of these thefts, he made threats to assault a shopkeeper, constituting threatening behaviour. Additionally, Dobson failed to comply with his obligations under the sex offenders register by not keeping in contact with the police as required.

The court heard details of these breaches during the hearing on Monday, December 15, 2025. Lancashire Police, through their Neighbourhood Policing Team, highlighted their zero-tolerance approach to shoplifting and abuse towards retail workers. PC 8794 Smith, involved in the case, noted that the force is working through Operation Vulture to target such individuals and their unacceptable behaviour.

In light of Dobson's continued risk to the community, the police requested a Criminal Behaviour Order alongside the imprisonment. The court granted this order, valid for three years, which prohibits Dobson from entering any shop in the centre of Lancaster and from entering any Spar, Aldi, or B&M stores across the whole of Lancashire. This measure aims to minimise his offending behaviour upon release.

The case underscores the challenges in managing registered sex offenders post-release, with Dobson's actions demonstrating a rapid return to criminal activity. Lancashire Police emphasised their commitment to public safety in addressing such incidents.
