Offence Summary

Callum Cameron was jailed for attempting to groom a 12-year-old boy online by sending explicit sexual messages, not realising he was communicating with an undercover police officer. His phone was found to contain prohibited images of children.

Full Description

Callum Cameron, a 54-year-old man from Bradford, engaged in a deliberate and predatory online grooming attempt targeting what he believed to be a 12-year-old boy. The interactions took place over a three-week period in June and July 2022, beginning in a group chat called 'Northern flirty fun' on a social platform.

The boy was in fact an undercover officer from West Yorkshire Police, who posed as a 12-year-old to monitor potential child exploitation. Cameron initiated contact, claiming to be 45 years old, and the conversations quickly escalated from innocuous exchanges to highly sexual content. Prosecutor Emily Thorbjornsen detailed how Cameron instructed the 'boy' on how to masturbate and encouraged him to imagine performing sex acts on men, stating that Cameron wrote he liked performing sex acts on young males and that the boy 'would love it'.

Cameron's messages became increasingly explicit, abandoning initial caution to steer discussions towards sexual topics for his own gratification. He was arrested on 6 July 2022, following which his phone was seized and analysed. The device contained prohibited images of children, including cartoon depictions of children as young as four in sexual activity, as well as searches for indecent images of children and bestiality. Cameron had also taken part in other inappropriate online chats.

In police interviews, Cameron admitted to chatting with a young male and acknowledged that his words had 'got a bit raunchy', but he denied any interest in indecent images, claiming the conversations were mere role-play. He later pleaded guilty at Bradford Crown Court to attempting to cause a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The court heard that Cameron had no previous convictions.

Mitigating, defence barrister Mike Walsh argued that Cameron had accepted his wrongdoing and was 'the author of his own misfortune'. Walsh highlighted the profound impact of the proceedings on Cameron, suggesting it would reduce the likelihood of future offending, and noted that the chances of him returning to court were limited.

Sentencing Cameron to a total of 16 months' imprisonment, His Honour Judge Ahmed Nadim described the actions as 'calculated to corrupt and groom an individual that you believed to be a 12-year-old child'. The judge condemned the 'disturbing and predatory pattern of behaviour' conducted in the anonymity of the internet, where Cameron deliberately and systematically directed conversations towards explicit sexual topics. In addition to the custodial sentence, Cameron was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration. The case was reported by The Telegraph & Argus, with details from the Bradford Crown Court proceedings.
