Offence Summary

Jonathan Barton was sentenced for performing an act of intercourse with a dog and possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals.

Full Description

Jonathan Barton, aged 53, from Yeovil, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on August 31 for his involvement in bestiality offences alongside Peter Edwards. Barton admitted to two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images, one count of performing an act of intercourse with an animal, and one charge of causing or allowing sexual penetration of a person by an animal. The offences centred around the abuse of Edwards' pet Labrador, Max, as uncovered during Dorset Police's investigation into Edwards' devices.

The court learned that Barton had been encouraged or allowed by Edwards to commit acts of bestiality with the dog. Videos and images found on Edwards' devices implicated Barton in these depraved activities. Following the investigation, which began with an anonymous tip-off, both men faced charges related to extreme pornography and animal sexual abuse.

Judge Stephen Climie, who also presided over Edwards' sentencing, imposed a three-year community order on Barton. This includes up to 40 rehabilitation activity days and 100 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, a five-year sexual harm prevention order was made, restricting Barton's interactions and requiring compliance to avoid further penalties.

The case underscores the collaborative nature of the offences, with Barton playing a direct role in the sexual exploitation of the animal. Dorset Police's thorough examination of digital evidence was crucial in bringing these matters to light, ensuring both perpetrators faced justice through non-custodial measures aimed at rehabilitation and public protection.

While specific quotes from the sentencing of Barton were not detailed in the proceedings reported, the judge's remarks on the 'bizarre and utterly depraved' nature of the acts applied broadly to the case. Barton, like Edwards, is now subject to ongoing monitoring to prevent recidivism.
