Offence Summary

Qari Sher Mohammad, a mosque leader from Forest Gate, sexually assaulted four children over nearly a decade at a mosque in Chatham, Kent.

Full Description

Qari Sher Mohammad, a 61-year-old imam from Woodford Road in Forest Gate, east London, was convicted of multiple counts of sexually assaulting children during his time at a mosque in Chatham, Kent.

The offences spanned almost a decade, with Mohammad targeting four young victims while carrying out his religious duties. The first report came in 2018 when a girl disclosed that Mohammad had inappropriately touched her between March 2014 and October 2016. Although arrested and interviewed in April 2018, he was not charged at that time due to concerns over the potential impact on the young victim, as reported by Kent Police.

Between May 2022 and December 2023, Mohammad sexually assaulted three additional children. He was arrested on 11 December 2023 following these reports. Police revisited the initial victim, now an adult, who expressed her support for prosecution. Mohammad was charged with multiple counts of sexual touching of a child.

Denying the allegations, Mohammad faced trial at Canterbury Crown Court where he was found guilty on 16 indictments. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison in September 2025, highlighting the severity of his abuse of position and the prolonged nature of the offences.
