Offence Summary

Mohammed Aqeel, a registered sex offender, carried out a premeditated sexual assault on a vulnerable 42-year-old woman walking home in Lye, leading to his imprisonment for 16 months and a five-year extension on his sex offender registration.

Full Description

A disturbing sexual assault occurred in the early hours in Providence Street, Lye, where 23-year-old Mohammed Aqeel targeted a vulnerable 42-year-old woman as she made her way home after a night out with friends. Aqeel, already a registered sex offender at the time, spotted the woman, exited his car, and approached her, executing what Judge Mark Eades described as a 'particularly obscene and unpleasant sexual assault' at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The court heard that the attack was premeditated, with Aqeel demonstrating clear intent by leaving his vehicle to pursue the victim. Judge Eades emphasised the frightening nature of the ordeal for the woman, stating: 'For her it must have been truly frightening. She had little idea how it was going to end. You were gratifying an urge and you did not give a toss about the effects of what you did to her.' A probation report further characterised Aqeel as a 'sexual predator who posed a risk to vulnerable women,' highlighting the troubling aspects of the case.

Following the assault, Aqeel fled the scene by car but was swiftly traced and arrested through DNA evidence collected by police. He admitted to the sexual assault charge during proceedings at Wolverhampton Crown Court. In his defence, Gurdeep Garcha noted that Aqeel had consumed cannabis prior to the incident, which impaired his memory, and expressed remorse: 'He is deeply sorry for his actions. He knows what he did was utterly wrong and totally unacceptable and he accepts it must have been very frightening for this woman.' Despite this, the judge imposed a custodial sentence of 16 months and required Aqeel to register as a sex offender for an additional five years.

Aqeel, residing on Wassell Road in Wollescote, had a prior caution for a sexual offence, underscoring his history. The case, reported by Stourbridge News, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals and the judiciary's firm stance against sexual predators.
