Offence Summary

Matthew Pearce was jailed for 27 years after being convicted of 20 sexual offences against four children, including rape and sexual assault, committed over an 11-year period in Huddersfield.

Full Description

Matthew Pearce, a 56-year-old resident of Glastonbury Drive in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to 27 years in prison at Leeds Crown Court for a horrific catalogue of sexual abuse against four children. The offences, which spanned an 11-year period, included rape, sexual assault, causing a child to watch a sexual act, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and indecency with a child. Pearce was found guilty on all 20 counts following a thorough investigation by West Yorkshire Police.

The abuse came to light in October 2021 when one of the victims, now an adult, reported the offences to the authorities. This initial report enabled detectives to identify additional victims and led to Pearce's arrest in 2022. The case was handled by the Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit, with Detective Constable Paul Campbell leading the investigation. He described the offending as 'horrific' and 'appalling in its depravity,' noting that even by the standards of their investigations into child sexual abuse, Pearce's actions stood out for their severity.

At the sentencing hearing on Monday, 11 November 2025, the court reflected the gravity of the crimes in the lengthy custodial term imposed. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex of the Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit praised the victims' bravery, stating, 'I hope the now adult victims in this case can take some measure of comfort from seeing Pearce jailed for this catalogue of appalling sexual abuse committed over an 11-year period. Their bravery in supporting the police and CPS has ensured a highly dangerous child sex offender will be off our streets for many years to come.' The police emphasised their commitment to supporting victims and encouraged others to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.

The case underscores the long-term impact of child sexual exploitation and the importance of victim testimonies in securing justice. West Yorkshire Police's investigation highlighted their focus on putting victims' needs first, as demonstrated in this successful prosecution.
