Offence Summary

Gurwinder Singh subjected a woman to years of verbal, physical, and psychological abuse, culminating in an attempted murder by stabbing her multiple times before raping her in Walsall.

Full Description

Gurwinder Singh, a 36-year-old man from Walsall, engaged in a prolonged campaign of abuse against a woman, beginning with verbal insults and degradation before escalating to physical assaults and stalking. This controlling behaviour persisted for several years, as detailed during proceedings at Stafford Crown Court.

On 6 May 2024, the abuse reached a terrifying peak when Singh forced his way into the woman's address armed with a knife, threatening to kill her. He stabbed her multiple times in the arm, chest, and stomach, leaving her just millimetres from death. Following the stabbing, Singh undressed and raped her, continuing to issue death threats throughout the ordeal. The victim later told responding officers that she would have died had they not arrived promptly.

Singh was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder, rape, and related offences. Earlier in 2024, he was found guilty at trial. This week, at Stafford Crown Court, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison, reflecting the severity of his violent and controlling actions over an extended period.

Detective Sergeant Chloe Collins, who led the investigation for West Midlands Police, praised the victim's courage, stating: "Her strength has been instrumental to this case." She emphasised Singh's dangerous nature, noting: "Singh is a very dangerous and controlling man and is rightly behind bars for a long period of time." The case underscores the police's commitment to supporting victims of domestic abuse and sexual offences, with specialist teams including forensic departments and the Crown Prosecution Service playing a vital role in securing the conviction.
