Offence Summary

Anthony Cox, a convicted sex offender, was jailed for breaching his sexual harm prevention order by deleting internet history after viewing images of children in swimwear, failing to provide a laptop for inspection, and undertaking voluntary work at a shop near a primary school that involved contact with children under 16.

Full Description

A sex offender with a extensive criminal history was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court for multiple breaches of his sexual harm prevention order. Anthony Cox, aged 62, from Cote Road, Aston, Bampton, in Oxfordshire, pleaded guilty to three counts of breaching the order, which was imposed due to his prior convictions related to sexual offences.

The breaches occurred between November 2023 and April 2024. During this period, Cox deleted his internet history from a laptop on at least 20 occasions and downloaded forensic software, actions that raised suspicions of attempts to conceal his online activities. In a police interview, Cox admitted to deleting the history because he had been viewing images of children in swimwear, highlighting the ongoing risk he posed despite the preventive measures in place.

  • On 19 January 2024, Cox failed to provide a laptop for inspection when ordered to do so by authorities.
  • He also engaged in voluntary work at a local shop situated near a primary school, which was frequented by pupils under 16, thereby placing him in direct contact with children in violation of the order's restrictions.

Police conducted an unannounced visit to Cox's address in March 2023, during which they seized and examined his laptop, uncovering evidence of the deletions. A further visit in January 2024 revealed another laptop in a bag that Cox claimed to have 'forgotten' about. He described the terms of the sexual harm prevention order as 'confusing' during his interview but accepted responsibility for the breaches.

The court was informed that Cox had 31 previous convictions for 68 offences, many of which were sexual in nature, leading Judge Michael Gledhill KC to describe his criminal record as 'deplorable'. Nick Cotter, mitigating on behalf of Cox, acknowledged the inevitability of an immediate custodial sentence. On 17 February 2024, Cox was jailed for 12 months.

This case was reported by Toby Oliver for This is Oxfordshire, with images provided by Thames Valley Police (TVP). The incident underscores the importance of compliance with sexual harm prevention orders to protect the public, particularly children, from known offenders.
