Offence Summary

Graham Ramsden was convicted of multiple indecent sexual assaults and indecency with a child against a very young victim between 1970 and 1977, and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Full Description

A man from Dewsbury has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for a series of horrific sexual offences committed against a very young child over several years in the 1970s.

Graham Ramsden, residing at Kirk Close in Dewsbury, was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of eight counts of indecent sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. The offences took place between 1970 and 1977, beginning when the victim was very young. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reported the crimes to Kirklees child safeguarding detectives in 2020, leading to Ramsden's arrest and subsequent trial.

The court heard details of the 'disgusting crimes' that spanned a significant portion of the victim's early childhood. Despite the passage of decades, the investigation proceeded with determination, culminating in Ramsden's conviction. He was sentenced on 30 October 2025 to 11 years' imprisonment, with an additional two years on licence.

  • Offences: Eight counts of indecent sexual assault (1970-1977)
  • Additional charges: Two counts of indecency with a child
  • Sentence: 11 years in prison plus 2 years on extended licence

Detective Constable Paul Campbell of the West Yorkshire Police's Kirklees District Child Safeguarding Unit commented on the case, stating: 'Ramsden’s sentencing today is another clear demonstration that the passage of time can be no barrier to justice, no matter how many years ago criminal activity took place. He has been brought to justice thanks to the bravery and determination of his victim, who has made him answer for the crimes he committed when she was a very young child.' Campbell further emphasised the force's commitment to supporting victims, adding: 'Thanks to her courage, Ramsden has had to answer for the serious sexual abuse he subjected her to and is now behind bars.'

The case underscores the ongoing efforts by West Yorkshire Police to pursue historical sexual abuse allegations, with a focus on victim support. Authorities continue to encourage anyone affected by similar offences, whether recent or long past, to come forward.
