Offence Summary

Arafat Osman, known as 'Left Eye', ran the drugs business in a Somali gang convicted of paying for child sexual services and supplying drugs while exploiting Bristol teenagers.

Full Description

Arafat Osman, 20, alias 'Left Eye', was a central figure in the drug operations of a 13-man Somali gang convicted of child sexual exploitation and prostitution in Bristol. The group targeted vulnerable girls in care, aged 13-17, subjecting them to grooming, rape, and forced prostitution over two years from 2011.

During the first trial at Bristol Crown Court, Osman was convicted of paying for the sexual services of Girl A and admitted supplying heroin and cocaine. As the gang's drug business leader, he used a 16-year-old's flat in Easton as a base for dealing and abuse. Avon and Somerset Police's Operation Brooke exposed the network through victim accounts and digital evidence.

  • Osman and associates exploited girls by offering gifts and drugs, then coercing them into sex with gang members, claiming it was cultural norm.
  • One victim was found cowering in a cupboard, revealing the extent of control through fear and isolation.

Sentenced on 27 November 2014 to 13 years, Osman's case underscored the link between drug dealing and sexual exploitation. Prosecutor Anna Vigars noted the girls' normalisation of abuse. Senior Crown Prosecutor Howard Phillips praised the victims' bravery, stating the convictions should deter other abusers.

The scandal prompted Home Office reviews and community outrage, with the Bristol Somali Forum expressing deep shock and calling for full punishment under the law.
