Full Description

An elderly paedophile from Leeds, Denis Coe, was sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2023 for multiple child sex offences committed against a young girl over a year-long period. The abuse was systematic, with Coe targeting the victim 'every chance he had' and taking steps to prevent her from reporting the vile acts. The victim, a child under the age of 13, was forced to endure 15 years of therapy as a result of the trauma inflicted.

Coe, formerly residing at Winrose Hill in Belle Isle, Leeds, was found guilty after a trial on counts including causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, sexual assault, and paying for the sexual services of a child. Court records detail how he repeatedly forced the girl to touch his penis, demanded she perform oral sex on him, and instructed her to take photographs of her genitals. His previous convictions demonstrated a long-standing sexual interest in young girls to satisfy his own needs, as noted in sentencing remarks.

While serving his sentence at HMP Moorland near Doncaster, the 75-year-old Coe underwent surgery for lung cancer. He subsequently died in hospital in March 2025 from a chest infection. A report by the Prisons & Probation Ombudsman, published recently, investigated his death in custody and concluded that the clinical care he received at the prison was of a good standard, equivalent to that expected in the community. The report specifically highlighted that Coe was given 'compassionate care' by prison staff in his final days.

The case was prosecuted in Leeds courts, with evidence presented during the trial underscoring the severity of Coe's predatory behaviour. West Yorkshire Police were involved in the investigation, as indicated by imagery and reporting from the Yorkshire Evening Post. This incident reflects ongoing efforts to hold paedophiles accountable, though Coe's death behind bars marked an early end to his custodial term.
