Full Description

Ross Brogan, a 31-year-old technician from Finnieston in Glasgow, was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for a series of sexual offences against young boys in South Ayrshire. The case came to light following a major investigation by Police Scotland, which uncovered Brogan's calculated grooming tactics using the Snapchat account 'ScottishLad2502'. Brogan admitted to six charges, including the rape of a 13-year-old boy, at the High Court in Glasgow.

The court heard that Brogan preyed on vulnerable teenagers by offering them codes for games consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation, as well as cash, in exchange for indecent images and videos. One primary victim, a 13-year-old boy, received over £1,000 in Xbox tokens and additional money over several months. Brogan began by sending an anonymous friend request and escalating demands from innocent photos to explicit content. The boy, unaware of Brogan's true identity, confided in him about his concerns, only for Brogan to exploit the situation further by requesting more material.

  • Brogan physically sexually abused the teenager on multiple occasions in 2020 and 2021, including one instance where he left £170 near a lamppost as 'payment' for the abuse.
  • A second boy was targeted from July 2020, receiving £45 in PlayStation codes after Brogan threatened to harm him and his family if he did not comply with demands for photos.
  • A third victim was given £75 in console tokens and sent photos after similar grooming, though he eventually blocked Brogan when questions about his family arose.
  • Brogan attempted to contact a fourth boy on social media but was refused when they met.

Prosecutor Leanne Cross detailed how the activities persisted despite the victims' lack of knowledge about Brogan's identity. The first victim's parents grew suspicious when their son claimed to have won money on YouTube and discovered the truth when he disclosed the Snapchat exchanges. Described as 'shocked and disgusted', they reported the matter to police. Detectives initially struggled to trace the Snapchat account but linked Brogan through evidence of the console code transfers.

Judge Bruce Erroch KC addressed Brogan during sentencing, stating: 'You are a mature man who chose to act as you did. It was clearly planned, calculated and the opposite of spontaneous. You targeted individuals who were vulnerable due to their youth.' Brogan, who admitted his crimes the previous month, was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and subjected to non-harassment orders preventing contact with the victims. He will be supervised for three years upon release.

Defence counsel Patricia Baillie noted that Brogan understood the power imbalance and expressed remorse. Detective Inspector Stephen Palmer of Police Scotland commended the victims' strength, adding: 'Brogan is a depraved sexual offender who gave no thought to his victims, just using them for his sexual gratification. These boys have been deeply impacted by his actions and I hope this sentence brings them some comfort.' The case highlights the dangers of online grooming, with Brogan's actions spanning multiple locations in South Ayrshire.
