Samuel Rust, a 23-year-old man previously residing in Boverton, Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, was sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court on 17 December 2025 to six-and-a-half years' imprisonment for serious sexual offences committed against a woman when both were teenagers.
The court heard that Rust and his victim were both 16 years old at the time of the initial offences. He was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. On a separate occasion, Rust tied the woman up with her consent but then proceeded to leave her naked in a cupboard for 15 minutes without her consent, leading to a conviction for false imprisonment. Prior to the trial, Rust admitted to possessing extreme pornographic images, with approximately 4,500 videos discovered on electronic devices seized by Gloucestershire Police in April 2024. Many of these videos depicted violence and sexual abuse against women.
During the trial, Rust was acquitted of 25 other counts, and the jury failed to reach a verdict on seven additional charges. Judge Ian Lawrie KC, presiding over the case, noted that Rust had been of previous good character but had shown 'little remorse of substance' for his crimes. The judge highlighted Rust's consumption of extreme pornography as an aggravating factor, expressing concern that 'a spectator of such material can become an active participant'. He described Rust's behaviour as stemming from an 'extraordinary fixation' with demeaning and brutal pornography, leading to a perception of women as 'objects of gratification' and a 'fascination with pushing the boundaries of sex', posing an 'enduring risk'.
The victim's impact statement, read in court, powerfully conveyed the lasting trauma inflicted by Rust's actions. She stated: 'The abuse I have suffered at the hands of you, Samuel Rust, is indescribable and yet I am almost certain you cannot grasp how seriously your actions have affected anyone but yourself.' She continued: 'For years, I have felt the crushing, debilitating weight of fear and shame in my own body, because of you... Flashes of the violent and humiliating acts you committed against me come to me with seemingly no rhyme or reason. And yet in those moments, I feel disgust in my own body.' Despite the harrowing nature of the trial, she expressed gratitude to those who made the conviction possible.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Rust was handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and restraining orders against the victim and two other women. Investigating officer Detective Constable Annabel Brittain from Gloucestershire Police commended the judge's decision to impose the lifelong order, stating it would help ensure public safety after Rust's release. The case was reported by BBC News, drawing attention to issues of sexual violence and the influence of extreme pornography.
