Full Description

Steven Tonks, a 50-year-old resident of Windmill Road, Gillingham, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on 26 March 2021 to one year in jail following his admission of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

The offence occurred between 6 and 21 November 2018, when Tonks engaged in online conversations with an individual he believed to be a 12-year-old girl. During these exchanges, Tonks made sexually explicit remarks and sent explicit images of himself, demonstrating clear intent to groom the supposed child.

Tonks was arrested on 21 November 2018 in Goudhurst Road, Gillingham, after information came to light revealing the nature of his online interactions. He was subsequently charged with one count of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Chris Horan from Kent Police commented on the case, stating: "Tonks engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a person he believed to be a young child and I do believe he would have continued to do so, and would very likely to have progressed his offending if he had not been arrested." Horan further encouraged the public to report similar concerns to Kent Police, emphasising that such reports are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

This case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the proactive role of law enforcement in preventing child sexual exploitation within the United Kingdom.
