Offence Summary

Kevin Goodchild, a pensioner from St Osyth, was convicted of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child after messaging what he believed were 12-year-old girls on social media, which were actually operated by a paedophile hunter group. His sentencing was adjourned to December 11 due to incomplete medical reports.

Full Description

Kevin Goodchild, a 66-year-old pensioner from Lilac Avenue in St Osyth, Essex, stood trial at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier this month for multiple child sex offences. He was charged with three counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity and four counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. Goodchild denied all charges but was found guilty by a jury on every count.

The court heard that Goodchild had been using his son's name to message several social media accounts, believing he was communicating with girls as young as 12. In reality, these accounts were being operated by members of a paedophile hunter vigilante group, who exposed his inappropriate interactions. The prosecution alleged that Goodchild's messages were sexually explicit and aimed at grooming the supposed children.

Originally scheduled for sentencing on Monday at Chelmsford Crown Court, the hearing was adjourned because the necessary medical reports had not been prepared for the judge. A new date was set for Thursday, December 11, when Goodchild will receive his formal sentence. The case was reported by the Clacton and Frinton Gazette, with coverage by senior crime and court reporter Daniel Rees.

This incident highlights the role of vigilante groups in identifying potential online predators, though such operations often work alongside police investigations. Goodchild, described in court as a 'pervert pensioner', faces significant consequences following his conviction for these serious offences.
