Offence Summary

Jamie Lee Hardy pleaded guilty to five child sex offences involving a 14-year-old girl, including engaging in sexual activity with her and grooming. He faces a custodial sentence and has been placed on the Sex Offender Register.

Full Description

At Carlisle Crown Court, Jamie Lee Hardy, a 34-year-old man formerly residing on Meadow Road in Whitehaven, Cumbria, appeared and pleaded guilty to five serious child sex offences committed against a 14-year-old girl. The offences, which took place between September 2022 and December 2024, involved grooming and sexual exploitation of the minor.

The charges to which Hardy admitted were: engaging in sexual activity with a child aged 14 to 15, while not reasonably believing she was 16 or over; two similar offences; meeting a child following sexual grooming on at least two occasions; and sexually communicating with a child for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification. All allegations related to the same victim, highlighting a pattern of predatory behaviour towards the young girl.

During the hearing, Marion Weir, representing Hardy, acknowledged that her client was aware of the custodial sentence he faced and requested a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service to inform the judge's decision. Judge Michael Fanning addressed Hardy directly, noting that his prompt guilty pleas would result in a one-third reduction in his sentence. 'You know you face custody,' the judge stated. 'The length of that sentence may well be assisted by the contents of the report. So cooperate.'

As a consequence of his guilty pleas, Hardy was immediately placed on the Sex Offender Register, requiring him to notify local police within three days of any changes to personal details, including his address. He was granted bail pending sentencing, scheduled for 22 January 2025, at the same court. The case was reported by News & Star, with coverage from chief reporter Phil Coleman, underscoring the gravity of child sex offences in the Whitehaven community.
