Offence Summary

Ameen Hussain, a 22-year-old from Blackburn, sent sexual messages to a decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl online, believing her to be a child, but avoided immediate jail after receiving a suspended sentence at Preston Crown Court.

Full Description

Ameen Hussain, a 22-year-old resident of Blackburn, Lancashire, engaged in online communications with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, sending a series of explicit sexual messages over a five-day period from 12 to 17 May 2021. The 'girl' was in fact a decoy operated by a member of an online paedophile hunter organisation, designed to expose potential child sex offenders.

Prosecutor Ellie McManus detailed at Preston Crown Court how Hussain was repeatedly informed of the decoy's age but persisted with the conversations. He sent messages including requests for pictures, suggestions for her to watch pornography, and descriptions of sexual acts. Hussain also shared that he was naked in bed and sent a non-sexual image of himself, while inquiring about her school experiences related to sex education. When the decoy indicated she had no sexual photos, Hussain continued with obscene content, advising her to view pornography discreetly at night with the volume low.

Defence counsel Umar Shahzad highlighted a significant delay in processing data from Hussain's seized devices, noting it was not due to lack of cooperation. Shahzad emphasised that Hussain was just 18 at the time of the offences, had not reoffended since, and requested leniency considering these factors. The pre-sentence report described Hussain as an isolated young man in personal turmoil, though he initially claimed to the report author that he believed he was speaking to an older woman—a claim his counsel did not endorse. Hussain had also misrepresented his own age to the decoy, claiming to be 13.

Judge Robert Altham, in passing sentence, warned Hussain of the severe harm he could have caused to a real child, stating: 'I hope you now understand that had that been a real child, you would have caused significant, possibly irreparable, damage to her.' The judge imposed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for 20 months, along with 20 days of rehabilitation activity, 150 hours of unpaid work, registration on the sex offenders' register for 10 years, and a seven-year sexual harm prevention order.

This case, reported exclusively by the Lancashire Telegraph, underscores the role of paedophile hunter groups in identifying potential online predators, with the proceedings taking place at Preston Crown Court in Lancashire, England.
