Full Description

Hawre Mohamed, a 27-year-old man from Horley, Surrey, was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on December 8, 2023, following his conviction for sexual assault.

The incident occurred on September 22, 2023, at around 8:30pm at Horley railway station. Mohamed approached a young woman at the ticket barrier, asking for assistance on how to pass through. He then boarded the same train as her, heading towards London, and followed her through the carriage. Despite numerous empty seats available, he chose to sit next to her against her wishes.

Once seated, Mohamed began speaking to the woman and then touched her inappropriately while attempting to kiss her. She repeatedly asked him to leave her alone, but he persisted, even suggesting that she return with him and inquiring about her age, stating that he 'doesn’t go for below 18'. The woman eventually moved away from him and alighted at Redhill station, where she promptly reported the assault to station staff and the British Transport Police (BTP).

Following the report, BTP officers identified and arrested Mohamed days later in East Croydon. He was taken into custody and later found guilty of one count of sexual assault in the previous month. In addition to his custodial sentence, Mohamed was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

BTP Detective Constable Geraldine Devaney commented on the case, describing Mohamed as 'a sexual predator who preyed on a woman travelling alone and wouldn’t take no for an answer. His behaviour that day was simply vile.' She praised the victim's courage, noting that it enabled the authorities to bring him to justice. The case was handled by the British Transport Police, who emphasised their commitment to addressing sexual offences on the rail network.
