Offence Summary

Former Special Constable Ronald Potter indecently assaulted a victim, linked to the broader Birmingham child sex ring investigation.

Full Description

Ronald Potter, 79, from Tippers Hill Lane, Fillongley, near Coventry, a former Special Constable, was jailed for three years for indecently assaulting another victim approximately 15 years prior to the main trial. Although his offence predated the 2009-2010 Birmingham ring, it was uncovered during the inquiry into the abuse of a 14-year-old boy, as reported at Warwick Crown Court.

The primary case involved the prostitution and sexual abuse of the boy by Stephen Kelly and others, including rapes and beatings. Potter's assault on a separate victim emerged from the same investigative review, highlighting patterns of abuse. West Midlands Police's handling improved following the main case's revelations.

  • Potter's conviction was for historical indecent assault.
  • The link to the ring prompted his inclusion in sentencing.

Judge Sylvia de Bertadano oversaw the proceedings, with Assistant Chief Constable Carl Foulkes noting the 'horrific' elements across cases and the force's learnings. Potter's role as a former officer added gravity to the betrayal of trust.
