Offence Summary

Pretended to be severely disabled to avoid justice after being charged with 15 child sex offences against three boys, and was jailed for 15 years.

Full Description

John Siddell, 41, formerly of Hinckley, Leicestershire, was convicted of 15 child sex offences against three boys aged between four and 14. He spent years pretending to be severely disabled, non-verbal and requiring a wheelchair in an attempt to avoid standing trial.

The deception was uncovered after CCTV footage showed Siddell moving normally without a wheelchair. He had been charged in June 2022 with 15 offences, following reports made to police in June 2021. Assessments in 2023 led the court to initially rule him unfit to plead, but further investigation revealed the claims were fabricated.

At Leicester Crown Court on 12 May 2026, Siddell was sentenced in his absence to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the offences and to perverting the course of justice. Judge Keith Raynor described the conduct of Siddell and his brother as "deceitful and devious" and said it had "entirely corrupted the course of justice."

James Siddell, 44, was also convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for assisting in the deception.
