Full Description

A man from Borth has been imprisoned for committing serious sexual offences against children, marking a significant victory for justice in a case involving non-recent abuse. David Wyn Williams, aged 43, was found guilty at Swansea Crown Court of four counts related to the rape and sexual activity with two child victims whom he targeted during their childhood years.

The case came to light following a disclosure by one of the victims, prompting an investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police. Detective Constable Lynette Jones led the probe, demonstrating remarkable determination despite the historical nature of the allegations and the absence of DNA evidence. Through extensive enquiries, DC Jones identified a second victim, broadening the scope of the investigation. The process involved collaboration with international authorities, including INTERPOL officials and Portuguese counterparts, to engage witnesses and gather crucial evidence. This comprehensive effort culminated in the Crown Prosecution Service authorising charges against Williams, comprising two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, and two counts of sexual activity with a child.

Originally scheduled for January 2024, the trial was adjourned and proceeded before a jury in the week commencing 13 May 2024 at Swansea Crown Court. After just three hours of deliberation, the jury delivered unanimous guilty verdicts on two counts of rape and two counts of sexual activity with a child. Williams was subsequently sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment. In addition to his custodial sentence, he has been placed on the Sex Offender Register and made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to protect the public from further risk.

Detective Inspector Sam Gregory, overseeing the case, praised the victims' courage, stating: 'I would like to commend the victims for their bravery and strength throughout this investigation. Williams is a sexual predator who had no regard for his victims, who were children.' Gregory further emphasised the importance of the case, adding: 'I hope this case serves as inspiration to others who may fear speaking out against abusers.' The investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police underscores their commitment to pursuing justice for historical sexual offences, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable regardless of time passed.
