Amal Krishna Bose, a 55-year-old senior heart surgeon and head of the cardiac department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, has been sentenced to six years in prison for multiple sexual offences committed against his junior female staff members. The case, prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) North West’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offence Unit, highlights the abuse of a position of trust within a professional medical environment.
The offences occurred between August 2017 and December 2022. Bose, who denied the allegations throughout the trial, claimed that his actions were merely 'workplace banter' or flirting. However, on 19 June 2025, a jury at Preston Crown Court found him guilty of 12 counts of sexual assault following a comprehensive trial. The victims, five women working under his supervision, endured severe emotional and psychological harm as a result of his behaviour, which included making inappropriate sexual comments and physical assaults.
The assaults created a toxic working environment, leading some victims to take extended sick leave or resign from their positions to escape Bose's advances. Victim personal statements presented at the sentencing hearing detailed the profound impact: one woman suffered from panic attacks and anxiety, while another reported feelings of isolation, vulnerability, and resorting to self-harm as a coping mechanism. Sacha Coyne, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offence Unit, commented on the case: 'Amal Bose was in a trusted position at the hospital. He abused this by creating a toxic environment, making sexual comments, and sexually assaulting five women who worked at the hospital. He appeared not to recognise the serious and lasting impact his actions would have, describing his behaviour at trial as 'workplace banter'. I would like to thank the women for supporting the prosecution, and I hope now Bose has been brought to justice they can find some closure. This case should send a clear message to perpetrators of sexual abuse, the Crown Prosecution Service will not hesitate to prosecute abusers, regardless of the position that the abuser holds in society.'
Bose, born on 3 February 1970 and residing in Lancaster, was sentenced on 16 September 2025 at Preston Crown Court. The CPS press release emphasises the severity of the offences and the commitment to holding high-profile individuals accountable. This incident underscores the lasting effects of workplace sexual misconduct in the healthcare sector.
