Offence Summary

Gary Dennett, a 55-year-old man from Cambridgeshire, attempted to groom and sexually communicate with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl via WhatsApp, sending hundreds of explicit messages, and was found in possession of indecent images of a child.

Full Description

Gary Dennett, a 55-year-old resident of Croxton in Cambridgeshire, engaged in online grooming activities targeting what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The interactions began on a dating app where Dennett initiated contact, subsequently moving the conversation to WhatsApp, where he sent hundreds of sexual messages. These messages included explicit requests for the 'girl' to touch herself inappropriately, demonstrating clear intent to incite sexual activity.

The 'girl' was in fact a decoy created by an online child activist group, designed to expose potential paedophiles. Upon discovering the nature of the communications, the group passed the evidence to Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Police investigators identified Dennett and arrested him at his home on Abbotsley Road, Croxton, near St Neots, in March 2024. During the search, officers seized a mobile phone from the property, which was found to contain 17 indecent images of a girl, further evidencing Dennett's involvement in child sexual exploitation.

Dennett initially denied responsibility, claiming his account had been 'hacked', which delayed proceedings and increased costs to the taxpayer. However, he eventually pleaded guilty to the charges just a month before his trial. On Tuesday, 7 April 2024, at Peterborough Magistrates' Court acting as a crown court, Dennett was sentenced to three years and two months in prison for attempting to cause or incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, attempted sexual communications with a child, and making an indecent photograph of a child.

Detective Constable Matthew Walshe, who led the investigation for Cambridgeshire Constabulary, commented on the case: 'Dennett believed he was engaging in the abuse of a 14-year-old child. He refused to admit responsibility until a month before the trial, claiming to have been 'hacked' and causing delays for other victims and additional expense to the taxpayer. The grooming and sexual exploitation of children can have devastating effects on a child’s emotional development, mental health and self esteem that continue into adulthood – and for adults like Dennett, can lead to well-deserved prison time.' This case underscores the vigilance of both activist groups and law enforcement in combating online child sexual exploitation within the United Kingdom.
