Full Description

Graham Wragg, a 44-year-old resident of Seaview Road in Liscard, Wirral, was convicted of sexually assaulting a young woman on a train in Merseyside. The incident occurred on Friday, August 1, 2025, at approximately 8:30pm, during a journey from Liverpool Lime Street to New Brighton railway station.

The court heard that the 18-year-old victim and her partner had boarded the train at Birkenhead North station and sat in a row of empty seats directly in front of Wragg. While the train was in motion, Wragg reached through the gap between the seat and the window, touching the woman inappropriately before committing the sexual assault. Distressed by his actions, the victim and her partner immediately stood up and moved to a different carriage to escape the situation.

Upon arriving at Wallasey Bridge station, the couple alighted from the train, but Wragg followed them and began shouting aggressively. The pair managed to return home safely, after which they reported the incident to British Transport Police (BTP) via the non-emergency number 0800 40 50 40. Following a thorough investigation by BTP, Wragg was identified and arrested at his home address.

Despite pleading not guilty and maintaining his innocence throughout the trial—claiming he had merely been reaching for a water bottle—Wragg was found guilty on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Liverpool Magistrates' Court. He was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years. The conviction was secured through evidence presented by BTP, highlighting the unacceptable nature of Wragg's behaviour.

BTP Detective Sergeant Callum Lancaster commented on the case, stating: "This sentence reflects the courage of the young woman who came forward to report this incident. Wragg’s actions that day were completely unacceptable, and although he claimed he was simply reaching for a water bottle, we were able to prove otherwise and secure a conviction." The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such offences on public transport.
