Offence Summary

Adam Bessey created a fake online profile using stolen images of a Facebook friend and her children to engage in chats about child sex abuse, leading to his imprisonment and a subsequent ban on contact with children under 16.

Full Description

Adam Bessey, a 37-year-old resident of Wheatacre Drive, Corton, near Lowestoft, Suffolk, has been described as a 'monster' for his online activities involving the sexual abuse of children. In June, Bessey was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Norwich Crown Court after pleading guilty to two charges related to his creation and use of a false online profile for illicit communications.

The court heard that Bessey stole 820 innocent images from the Facebook account of a friend and her children to construct this deceptive profile. He then utilised it to chat with others about the sexual abuse of children, betraying the trust of the victim in a manner deemed 'utterly monstrous' by Judge Anthony Bate. This case highlights the dangers of online anonymity and the exploitation of personal images for predatory purposes.

Following his custodial sentence, prosecutors sought and obtained a sexual risk order at King’s Lynn Magistrates' Court. The order imposes strict restrictions on Bessey, including a ban on any unsupervised contact or communication with children under 16, prohibition from living or sleeping in any dwelling—such as tents, boats, or caravans—where children are present, and restrictions on working with children. Additionally, he must inform police of any mobile phone usage and is barred from online contact with under-16s.

The case was reported by the East Anglian Daily Press (EDP24), with coverage by crime correspondent Simon Parkin. It underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to protect children from online sexual exploitation, with the prosecuting force being Suffolk Constabulary, based on the location of the offences in Lowestoft.
