Offence Summary

Raymond Paterson, a 70-year-old pensioner from Inverness, was caught in a paedophile sting operation after sending indecent messages to decoy profiles posing as teenagers aged 13 to 15. He admitted to attempting to communicate indecently with an older child and was sentenced to a community-based order including placement on the sex offenders' register for three years.

Full Description

In a case highlighting the role of online child protection groups in combating paedophile activity, 70-year-old Raymond Paterson from Inverness was ensnared in a coordinated sting operation by volunteers from three different paedophile hunter organisations. Between March and June 2023, Paterson believed he was engaging in conversations with teenagers aged 13 to 15 on online platforms. Unbeknownst to him, these profiles were operated by adult volunteers dedicated to exposing potential child sex offenders.

The court at Inverness Sheriff Court heard detailed accounts of Paterson's communications, which included complimenting the decoys on their underwear, providing explicit instructions on how to pleasure themselves, and describing sexual acts he wished to perform with them. Fiscal depute Susan Love outlined that examples of these messages, such as Paterson inquiring if the decoys 'shaved', were presented to Sheriff Robert Frazer but not read aloud in open court. The volunteers meticulously collated the evidence from these interactions, which spanned a 20-day period in 2023 during which, according to his defence, a 'malaise had overtaken' Paterson.

On 11 June 2023, the paedophile hunters confronted Paterson at his home in Inverness, leading to police involvement. Officers from Police Scotland responded promptly, cautioning and arresting him before seizing his phone. The conversations were later recovered from the decoy operators' records, providing crucial evidence. Paterson was taken to Burnett Road police station in Inverness, where he admitted to the messaging but insisted he 'never intended to physically meet them'. As a first-time offender, a background report was prepared, recommending against imprisonment.

Sheriff Robert Frazer, considering the social worker's recommendation, opted not to impose a prison sentence. Instead, Paterson was ordered to participate in a rehabilitation programme for sex offenders, placed under social work supervision, and added to the sex offenders' register for three years. He was also instructed to complete 220 hours of unpaid work, with additional restrictions imposed on his use of internet-enabled devices to prevent further offending. This outcome reflects the court's emphasis on rehabilitation for this elderly first offender while ensuring public protection measures are in place.

The case was reported by The Press and Journal, underscoring the collaborative efforts between civilian groups and law enforcement in tackling online grooming and sexual communication offences against children.
