Offence Summary

Full Description

Daniel Kristiansen, now 80 years old and residing in Dunston, Gateshead, was sentenced to three years in prison at Newcastle Crown Court for the indecent assault of a young girl who was between four and seven years old at the time of the offences. The abuse, which occurred more than four decades ago, involved Kristiansen promising the child a Cabbage Patch Kids doll if she groped him, exploiting her innocence in a deeply manipulative manner.

The court heard harrowing details of the abuse during the trial. Kristiansen had denied the wrongdoing, but a jury found him guilty of indecent assault. The victim, now an adult, provided a powerful victim impact statement, describing how the abuse left her feeling 'dirty' and like 'faulty goods', with a major and lasting impact on her life. When the girl attempted to stop the touching, Kristiansen coerced her by saying, 'come on, we are just being nice', further illustrating the predatory nature of his actions.

Judge Stephen Earl, presiding over the case, emphasised the profound consequences of Kristiansen's behaviour, stating that the abuse 'clearly' had a 'very important and far-reaching' effect on the victim. In addition to the custodial sentence, Kristiansen was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring to protect the public. The case was reported by the BBC, highlighting the long-overdue justice for the victim after decades of suffering in silence.

This sentencing underscores the commitment of the UK justice system to addressing historical sexual offences against children, no matter how much time has passed. Northumbria Police, the prosecuting force in the region, investigated the allegations, leading to Kristiansen's arrest and trial.
