Timothy Peel

A Norfolk police officer, Constable Timothy Peel, aged 37 from Norwich, has been convicted of serious sexual offences involving indecent images of children. Peel, who was stationed at Wymondham Police Station, faced charges after police searched his home in May 2015, uncovering disturbing content on his personal computer.

The investigation began as part of routine procedures, leading to the discovery of five indecent images categorised as child sexual abuse material, alongside one extreme pornographic image. Peel denied three counts of making indecent images of children but was found guilty by magistrates at Ipswich Magistrates' Court. The conviction underscores the rigorous standards expected of law enforcement personnel, particularly in matters concerning child protection.

Following the search, Peel was immediately suspended from duty, a status he has maintained since May 2015 pending the outcome of both criminal proceedings and internal disciplinary actions by Norfolk Police. Detective Inspector Dave Freeman, from the force's Child Abuse Investigation Unit, emphasised the importance of upholding public trust, stating: "The public's confidence in the police depended on the force demonstrating the highest level of personal and professional behaviour." He further affirmed the constabulary's commitment: "The Constabulary will continue to robustly investigate any allegations of criminal conduct by its employees."

Peel's sentencing is set for 25 July 2016 at Ipswich Magistrates' Court, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment under UK law for these grave offences. This case highlights the zero-tolerance approach within policing towards child sexual exploitation, ensuring that even officers are held accountable. The matter was handled by HM Courts & Tribunals Service, with Norfolk Police leading the probe into the allegations.
