On the evening of 12 May 2020, Soufyan Yahyaoui, a 41-year-old man of no fixed address, targeted a vulnerable elderly woman in her home in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Posing as a concerned individual checking on her welfare, Yahyaoui rang the doorbell before forcing his way inside. What followed was a violent assault that left the victim unconscious, suffering from a brain bleed, carpet burns from being dragged across the floor, and other serious injuries.

During the ordeal, Yahyaoui made attempts to sexually assault the victim, breaching an existing sexual harm prevention order imposed on him due to prior offences. Nearby residents heard the disturbance and confronted Yahyaoui, prompting him to flee on foot. Police officers from Kent Police arrived promptly and, guided by witnesses, arrested him shortly afterwards.

The investigation was led by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate. In his police interview, Yahyaoui denied any involvement in the crime. At Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm, breaching a sexual harm prevention order, and criminal damage. However, he denied the charges of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and sexual assault, leading to a trial where he was ultimately convicted on those counts.

On 20 August 2021, Yahyaoui was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment, with a requirement to serve at least eight years before being eligible for parole. He was also placed on an extended licence period of one year and added to the sex offenders register indefinitely. Detective Inspector Adam Marshall of Kent Police described Yahyaoui as 'a dangerous and predatory sex offender' who had 'deliberately targeted a vulnerable and elderly victim and subjected her to a truly harrowing ordeal.' Marshall commended the victim's courage in giving evidence and thanked the witnesses whose intervention was crucial in securing the conviction, stating, 'The streets are certainly a safer place now he is in prison and I hope the sentence will provide some comfort to the victim that at least justice has now been served.'
