Offence Summary

A former Surrey dance teacher was jailed for 21 years after being convicted of historic sexual abuse against multiple children over three decades.

Full Description

A former dance teacher from Farnham, Surrey, was sentenced to 21 years in prison after being found guilty of 20 sexual offences against children spanning from 1972 to 2004. John Maddox, aged 83, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, where he received the lengthy custodial term.

The court heard that many of the offences took place at Maddox's home in Farnham. His victims were aged between eight and fifteen at the time of the abuse. Maddox used his position as a dance teacher to manipulate and exploit children, preying on their vulnerability over a period of more than three decades.

Detective Sergeant Brendan Roberts of Surrey Police, who led the investigation, described Maddox as "a sexual predator who preyed on children". Roberts added: "He manipulated and took advantage of situations to sexually abuse his victims." The officer praised the victims for their courage in coming forward and giving evidence.

One of his victims, whose identity is protected by law, said in a statement: "I try to live everyday with an open heart, and with trust, but what happened to me does make it extremely hard. John does not have remorse. If he did, we wouldn’t even be here. One selfish, cruel man has altered the lives of so many, for so long."

Maddox was convicted of all 20 offences, which included multiple counts of indecent assault and other serious sexual crimes. The case underscores Surrey Police's commitment to pursuing historical abuse cases and securing justice for survivors. The 21-year jail term reflects the severity and prolonged nature of the abuse inflicted on his young victims.
