Offence Summary

Roy Lockett, a former driving instructor, groomed and sexually abused a vulnerable young girl by plying her with alcohol, using sex toys, and making indecent images of her, before passing her to his son to continue the abuse.

Full Description

At Swansea Crown Court, Roy Lockett, a former driving instructor from Pembrey Road in Llanelli, was sentenced for a series of heinous sexual offences against a vulnerable young girl. The court heard that Lockett had initially targeted the child, subjecting her to a prolonged period of grooming and abuse. He plied the victim with alcohol to lower her inhibitions and used items from his extensive collection of sex toys during the assaults. Furthermore, Lockett captured indecent images of the child, exploiting her vulnerability for his own gratification.

The judge described Lockett's actions in stark terms, stating that he had treated the child as his 'sexual plaything' before handing her over to his son, Peter Austin, as 'a prize' to perpetuate the abuse. Lockett had been convicted on multiple counts, including three counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, causing a child to watch a sexual act, two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and making an indecent photograph of a child. He had also pleaded guilty to an additional count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of engaging in sexual communications with a child prior to sentencing.

The abuse came to light through a thorough investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police, leading to Lockett's arrest and subsequent trial. The victim, a vulnerable young girl, was compelled to provide evidence in court as the defendants denied the charges. Despite their denials, the evidence presented was compelling, resulting in Lockett's conviction and imprisonment. This case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual exploitation in the community, with Lockett's actions representing a grave betrayal of trust.
