Offence Summary

Zaheer Ahmed was jailed for two years after being found guilty of sexual activity with a child, an offence committed against an underage girl more than a decade ago.

Full Description

Zaheer Ahmed, a 34-year-old man from Halifax, has been sentenced to two years in custody following his conviction for a sexual offence against an underage girl. The case, which involved a complex investigation by Calderdale Child Safeguarding Officers, began in 2020 when the victim came forward to report the incident that occurred over ten years prior.

The offence took place more than a decade before the report, highlighting the long-term impact on the victim who demonstrated remarkable strength in coming forward. Ahmed was charged and stood trial at Bradford Crown Court in October, where a jury found him guilty of sexual activity with a child. The court proceedings underscored the perseverance of the victim and her family throughout the investigative and judicial process.

In addition to his custodial sentence, Ahmed was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years, ensuring ongoing monitoring to protect the public. Detective Chief Inspector Claire Smith of Calderdale District Police commended the victim's courage, stating: "I commend the victim in this case for her strength, patience and fortitude and I hope the outcome today gives her some comfort knowing justice has been served." She further emphasised the devastating effects of such crimes on victims and their families, thanking them for their support during the investigation.

The case was handled by West Yorkshire Police, with the investigation originating from Calderdale. Smith also encouraged other potential victims to report offences, noting: "We encourage anyone who may have been subjected to sexual offending to come forward, there is no time limit to get the justice you deserve. You will be listened to, supported and we will do all we can to hold people accountable for their heinous crimes." This conviction serves as a reminder of the authorities' commitment to pursuing justice in historical sexual abuse cases.
