Philip Coats, now 28 years old and residing in South Shields, was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court for a series of sexual offences committed against two children during his time as a schoolboy. The court heard that Coats had abused the victims, employing threats and his physical superiority to ensure compliance. Despite denying the charges, he was found guilty following a trial.
The offences included two counts of rape and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. In one instance, Coats threatened a victim by warning he would push them down some stairs if they did not comply, while also overpowering them with his greater strength. The second victim was manipulated through emotional coercion, with Coats telling them that their mother would no longer love them if the abuse was reported.
During the sentencing hearing on 11 December 2025, victim impact statements were read out, highlighting the profound and lasting damage caused by Coats' actions. One victim stated: "There are no words to fully express the pain and devastation he has caused. The fear and pain are still with me." They further expressed their journey towards healing: "I'm no longer the helpless (child) you hurt, I'm growing and healing. For a long time I believed I was damaged goods and that no-one could ever love someone like me. Slowly, I have come to believe I'm worthy." The victim hoped for justice not only for themselves but for others who had been silenced.
The second victim described the impact on their life: "The abuse affected their schooling and made them feel angry and caused behavioural changes. I prefer to be on my own and struggle with trusting people." They added: "I'm glad I've now been believed and got my justice. I hope you use your time to reflect that what you did was so wrong and so cruel. You deserve everything that's coming to you."
Coats, who had no prior convictions, received a seven-year custodial sentence, which was reduced by approximately two-thirds due to his age at the time of the offences. In addition to imprisonment, he was required to sign the sex offenders register, subject to a sexual harm prevention order, and a restraining order. His defence counsel, Peter Sabiston, noted: "Whatever sentence that's imposed will have a devastating impact on Mr Coats." The case was reported by Chronicle Live, with coverage from court reporter Rob Kennedy.
