Full Description

A 33-year-old man from Suffolk has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl. Ross Smith, of Banham Road, Beccles, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday following his conviction on three counts of causing or inciting a girl under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

The offences occurred between 2018 and 2019. Smith had denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury after a trial. The court heard that Smith had no previous convictions for similar offences. Prosecutor Andrew Thompson read a statement from the victim's mother, who described Smith's actions as "despicable" and detailed the profound impact on her daughter and family.

Judge Emma Peters imposed the 10-year custodial sentence, along with an extended licence period of five years. Smith must serve at least two-thirds of the sentence in custody before being eligible for parole. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for life and received an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

The case was reported by the East Anglian Daily Press, with an image provided by Suffolk Constabulary showing Ross Smith.
